HTS Industry in New Zealand

New Zealand has established itself as a key player in the development and application of high temperature superconductivity (HTS) technologies since its discovery in 1988 and patenting of BSCCO. BSCCO was the first commercially viable material for wire production.

Based on this capability New Zealand has developed a strong global leadership position in the commercial sale of HTS devices made from commercially available HTS wire supplied by international manufacturers. Industry members such as HTS-110 Limited and General Cable Superconductors Limited are currently exporting scientific and industrial equipment based on HTS magnets and specialty cables for use in that equipment.

Our approach is attracting attention because New Zealand is building commercial revenues in advance of others offshore. This is resulting in foreign investment at the public and private sector level which in turn ensures our local industry remains anchored and can compete on the international stage.
